More than 500 donors, business and civic leaders, and advocates of public education gathered at Belmont’s Curb Event Center on Tuesday, March 2 to celebrate the 6th annual Nashville Alliance Public Schools Hall of Fame presented by HCA. With the largest award recipient roster to date, honorees included Keith Churchwell, M.D., Richard H. Fulton, R. Milton Johnson, Walter G. Knestrick, Tammy Genovese, and Kix Brooks. Genovese and Brooks were honored with the Distinguished Service Award for their tireless efforts in providing millions of dollars from CMA’s “Keep the Music Playing” program by which thousands of new musical instruments are placed into the hands of students.

Alliance board members and event co-chairs, Jennifer Frist and Jenny Hannon, created a special evening that featured a reception hosted at BMI, student musical entertainment, and centerpieces created by art students from 55 of the district’s schools. Aaron Solomon, morning news co-anchor at WSMV, emceed and introduced the honorees to accept their awards and make remarks. Mayor Karl Dean gave a special tribute to Mayor Richard Fulton and personally presented his award as a 2010 Distinguished Alumni. Dr. Jesse Register, Director of Schools, concluded the evening recounting the challenges and opportunities of our schools and expressed generous thanks to all attendees for their valued support. The late Nelson C. Andrews was remembered for his great advocacy for public education and as founder of the Nashville Alliance for Public Education.
